Lough Derg Yacht Club hosted the Mirror Southern Championships over the weekend of April 12th, 13th. Despite adverse weather conditions of strong winds, rain and hail (sunshine an occasional spectator only) twenty five boats competed, eleven from Lough Derg Yacht Club. Tim Starr, Lough Derg Yacht Club’s Sailing Secretary said that the success of the event was a “credit to the strength of the Mirror dinghy class, to the excellent support from the Yacht Club and to the organizational talents of Brian Rafferty and Joe O'Connor who managed the event”. Tim described the contest between the leading boats as “nip and tuck” with three sharing second place at the end of racing.
Principal race office Liam Maloney and his team were commended for excellent racing; they got five races off without a black flag and had all sailors back on shore by 13.00hrs on Sunday. Sailors who had travelled from the North of Ireland and who faced a five to six hour journey home were particularly pleased by this.
Between the committee boat and six safety and mark-laying boats, on the water support was given by twenty volunteers, with another five volunteers on shore to man the race office and manage communications for the event.
